Fernando Galrito presenta un recorrido histórico por la animación portuguesa desde 1923 hasta finales de los años 90, con obras de directores emblemáticos y películas de algunos de los primeros representantes de una nueva ola en animación. / Fernando Galrito takes us on a journey through the history of Portuguese animation from 1923 to the end of the 1990s, with works by emblematic directors and films by some of the first representatives of a new wave in animation.

O PESADELO DE ANTÓNIO MARIA (Joaquim Guerreiro, Portugal, 1923, 3’)
Divertida y feroz caricatura de uno de los políticos de la época, António Maria da Silva, entonces Presidente del Ministerio, cargo similar al actual Primer Ministro. La película formaba parte de la revista Tiro ao Alvo, representada por primera vez en el Edén Teatro, en Lisboa, cuyo paradero se desconoce. La restauración se basó en la animación de 159 dibujos y 8 subtítulos descriptivos, realizada por el productor e historiador Paulo Cambraia. / An amusing yet ferocious caricature of one of the politicians of the time, António Maria da Silva, the then President of the Ministry, an office similar to that of today’s Prime Minister. The film was part of a revue called Tiro ao Alvo, first performed at the Eden Theatre in Lisbon, the location of which is now unknown. The restored copy was based on the animation of 159 drawings and 8 descriptive subtitles, made by the producer and historian Paulo Cambraia.

O BONECO REBELDE (Sérgio Luiz, Portugal, 1941, 1’)
El joven dibujante Sérgio Luiz probó suerte animando uno de sus personajes, que aparecía en la revista O Papagaio desde 1939, en esta pequeña película, dibujada y montada en un estudio improvisado en su casa y proyectada en algunos cines de Lisboa anunciando el entreacto de la sesión. Luiz moriría de tuberculosis con solo 21 años. / In this short film, drawn and edited in a makeshift studio in his home and projected in a number of Lisbon cinemas to announce the intermission, the young cartoonist Sérgio Luiz tried his hand at animating one of his characters, who appeared regularly in the magazine O Papagaio from 1939. Luiz died of tuberculosis at the tender age of 21.

AUTO-MANIA (Armando Servais Tiago, Portugal, 1943, 5’)
Una pequeña aventura automovilística, realizada de forma amateur, siendo el autor todavía un adolescente. Tiago, fallecido en 2018, fue uno de los primeros en darse cuenta de que para demostrar su creatividad en el campo de la animación tenía que recurrir a la publicidad. / A little amateur motoring adventure made when the author was still a teenager. Tiago, who died in 2018, was one of the first to realise that if he wanted to show how creative he was in the field of animation, he would have to resort to advertising.

ESPIÕES / O MELHOR DA RUA (Armando Servais Tiago, Artur Correia, Portugal, 1965-1970, 3‘ (duración total)
Piezas publicitarias que muestran el sentido del humor, la inventiva y el ritmo narrativo que los autores imprimían a sus obras, aunque fueran para anunciar una marca de lubricantes o un suplemento de periódico. Correia, íntimo amigo de Servais Tiago, siguió el camino inverso, primero trabajó en publicidad y luego en ficción. / Commercials that show the sense of humour, inventiveness and narrative rhythm that the authors brought to their work, even though they were just vehicles for a lubricant brand or a newspaper supplement. Correia, a close friend of Servais Tiago, took the opposite route, starting out in advertising before turning to fiction.

FRANCO ASSASSINO (António Pilar, Portugal, 1976, 3’)
Única experiencia en cine animado del diseñador António Pilar, se trata de un feroz retrato del dictador español, realizado en una época en la que Portugal ya había conquistado la libertad, especialmente de expresión. Su autor dirigió cientos de películas, entre anuncios, películas genéricas para RTP, películas institucionales y cortometrajes. / Designer António Pilar’s only incursion into animation is a ferocious portrait of the Spanish dictator, made at a time when Portugal had already conquered freedom, especially freedom of expression. The author directed hundreds of films, including commercials, generic films for RTP, institutional films and short films. 

OH QUE CALMA (Abi Feijó, Portugal, 1985, 3’)
Realizada durante unas prácticas en la National Film Office de Canadá, en opinión de Fernando Galrito esta película inaugura de alguna manera lo que podemos llamar el "nuevo cine de animación portugués". / Made during an internship at the National Film Office of Canada, Fernando Galrito considers that this film is in a way the harbinger of what we can call the “new Portuguese animated cinema”.

EVASÃO-INVASÃO (Fernando Galrito, Joana Rebelo, Paulo Simões, Portugal, 1986, 3’)
Obra poco conocida donde Galrito, junto con Joana Rebelo y Paulo Simões, realiza un breve ensayo sobre el sueño de libertad de un hombre atrapado entre las cuatro paredes de una celda. / A little-known work in which Galrito, together with Joana Rebelo and Paulo Simões, presents a short essay on the dream of freedom of a man trapped within the four walls of a cell.

OS SALTEADORES (Abi Feijó, Portugal, 1993, 15’)
Adaptación, animada en grafito sobre papel, de un cuento de Jorge de Sena sobre un grupo de bandoleros que se refugiaron en Portugal tras la guerra civil española. Con Joaquim de Almeida como narrador. / An animated graphite on paper adaptation of a story by Jorge de Sena about a group of bandits who took refuge in Portugal after the Spanish Civil War. Narrated by Joaquim de Almeida.

ESTÓRIA DO GATO E DA LUA (Pedro Serrazina, Portugal, 1995, 5’)
Una película poética, de metamorfosis y contrastes, que cuenta la búsqueda de un gato por la intensa luminosidad de la luna. / A poetic film of metamorphoses and contrasts that tells the story of a cat's search for the intense luminosity of the moon.

A STUART (Zepe, Portugal, 1999, 11’)
Homenaje a uno de los ilustradores portugueses más carismáticos de principios del siglo XX, Stuart de Carvalhais, a través de una serie de paseos por una Lisboa sórdida y abandonada. / A tribute to one of the most charismatic Portuguese illustrators of the early 20th century, Stuart de Carvalhais, presented through a series of walks through a sordid and abandoned Lisbon.

A SUSPEITA (José Miguel Ribeiro, Portugal, 1999, 25’)
Ganadora del Premio Europeo Cartoon d'Or en 2000, A Suspeita es un ambicioso film policíaco animado en stop-motion que ensaya un asesinato en un viaje en tren. / Winner of the 2000 European Cartoon d'Or Award, A Suspeita is an ambitious stop-motion animated crime thriller about a murder on a train.
